Having moved to Walthamstow last summer, we are still enjoying getting to know the local restaurants. Tonight it was Raja tandoori. It's incredibly well placed being opposite the new cinema development and near the station, so I was a little surprised that only two tables had been taken on a Friday night. First impressions by the decor were positive and although the staff were staggeringly slow to take an order, we were happy waiting knowing that we were likely to have a good meal (based on reviews). I always believe you can tell a lot about a good Indian restaurant by the chutneys they serve with the poppadoms, and this where I started to think we might get an average curry at best. When it arrived we were disappointed. The lamb rogan, chicken tikka korai and Bombay potatoes were swimming in tasteless oil. All curries in fact had very little taste at all. The nan was also more like one warmed up from Tesco - very doughy without any crispness to the outside. In all one of the most disappointing curries ever had. Interestingly the waiter noted that we had not eaten the sauce and asked 'too much oil?' to which I replied 'absolutely, is this normal?'. He highlighted he had never seen it like that and took the plates away to later provide the bill at full cost with no apology.

This may have been a bad night, maybe their chef was off, however I hope they read this and raise their game!

We have now visited the Raja Tandoori a few times and it seems to get better and better. The food is really, really good and they are such lovely people. There are four of us and we went again on Friday night, Khan, one of the waiters actually remembered our names.
They really do look after you and should be much busier than they are, cannot recommend them highly enough.

Went to Raja Tandoori last Friday with two friends. We have lived in Walthamstow for over 12 years & have never tried it before the refurb. Somebody told us it was good, so we thought we would give it a try.
The food was really good, the staff very friendly, very funny service, in a ha, ha way, but that just added to the charm.
The bill was very reasonable & we had a lot of food & drink, so this is another restaurant we can add to our list.

Raja Tandoori has recently been refurbished along with a new shop front and is looking fantastic. I had been there in the past and always enjoyed my experience, the food was superb and the staff always very friendly and welcoming, and prices were good value too. Now the restaurant has a much classier feel to it, it is much brighter, there are candles on the tables, nice leather seats, wooden floors, and is generally looking top notch, but sadly the fish tank is gone which I always enjoyed watching!

The food is impeccable as always. I had the tandoori chicken tikka massala on my last visit which was delicious, full of flavour and good portion sizes too. There are plenty of vegetarian cdishes on offer as well as indian desserts such as gulabjamum and kulfi. Prices have risen a tiny tiny bit since before the refurbishment, but I would still argue that it is very good value.

Overall a very good place to go for a nice indian meal. Good value, very tasty, large portion sizes, and friendly knowledgeable service from a family run business that has been operating in walthamstow for years.

In reading reviews for restaurants in E17 I was appauled to see that a restaurant, my personal favourite was not listed among them. The Raja (224 High Street, Walthamstow, London E17 7JH) in my opinion is the best Indian restaurant in E17. I love my Indian cuisine and have eaten it in many places including Brick Lane but I have developed a certain loyalty to the Raja. It is so reasonably priced with special 'gourmet nights' on Tuesdays and Wednesdays where you can get; a starter, Main dish, side dish, Rice and naan of your choice for only £8.95! The staff there are extremely friendly as it is a famliy run restaurant! I went there with friends for my birthday and they gave us a complementary bottle of wine and beer! The menu is very diverse but my personal favourite is to order a chicken korma and peshwari naan! I have tried it in other Indian restaurants but it is never as good as the Raja! I think it is wrong that it has not as yet been acknowledged!
